Auschwitz - Birkenau is situated 70 kilometres west of Krakow and is the largest Nazi death camp and the most infamous symbol of the extermination of millions of European Jews. Today, the camp is a museum dedicated to the memory of those who suffered and died there. Each visitor is greeted by the inscription "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work Brings Freedom) above the gate, the same words which the prisoners saw as they walked to their deaths. Everything has been carefully preserved including the gas chambers, railway and camp’s buildings and it remains as it was in May 1945 when the Soviet Army liberated the camp.
